The Dinner Guest (L’invité)

(c) 2007 EUROPACORP ? TF1 FILMS PRODUCTION

Times have been tough for poor Gérard (Auteuil). He has been unemployed for several years. But his luck is about to turn, thanks to a possible job offer. But before signing the contract, he and his domestically-challenged wife Colette (Lemercier) must host a dinner for the prospective employer.

The trouble is, (and as one look at Gerard and Colette’s apartment will confirm), this is a rather dull couple, and despite their best intentions, it’s unlikely that they’re going to wow their guest.
Thankfully, there is a Communications Expert, Alexander (Lhermitte) on-hand nearby, who is eager to help. In just 24 hours, he believes he can transform the dreary couple and their dated apartment, thereby securing Gerard’s contract.

Sadly, Gerard and Colette are so clueless, that they follow the advice of their supposed style and communications guru.

The Dinner Guest was panned by many critics in Australia upon its theatrical release. While it may not have warranted a special trip to the cinema, it is worth taking a look at the DVD, especially if you are a fan of French farce. Auteuil, Lhermitte and Lemercier work well together in this witty send-up on contemporary society’s fixation on appearances and reliance on so-called gurus, and their flimsy expertise.
