Evangelion 1.01: You Are (Not) Alone

This 2007 animation has been adapted from the first part of the popular Evangelion anime series by Hikeaki Anno, who produced and was the primary Director, of this action-packed version.
Shinji is a young Japanese boy, and a bit of a loner, when he is summoned by his distant father, to help protect the world from the "Angels": the destructive mechanical beings that threaten the Earth.
Sent to live with a plucky young agent, Lt Colonel Misato Katsuragi, Shinji must come to terms with his new responsibilities, while also adapting to his new life in Tokyo 3 (i.e. the third version of Tokyo).
Fans of the Evangelion series would naturally be attracted to this film, and while it's probably handy to be familiar with the back story, it isn't absolutely essential.
Upon its release, Evangelion 101 was criticised by aficionados as lacking the emotional complexity of the the corresponding episodes of the series. However, it is action-packed, beautifully animated, and features a very good soundtrack.
