Adventures of Power

This film is bound to resonate with thousands of people across the world harbouring predilections towards a shameful hobby that is so taboo, that no film has ever focused on it before: air drumming.

That’s right. We’ve all heard of air guitarists: those rock’n’roll wannabes who mimic strumming guitar chords while listening to their favourite recordings. But as a society, we’ve been reluctant (or perhaps too embarrassed) to acknowledge the existence of those daring underground percussionists: air drummers. As the central character of this film proclaims: “... real drums are fine; but not everybody has them”.

If you thought drummers had been sufficiently ridiculed in This Is Spinal Tap (who can forget the veritable conveyer belt of exploding drummers), this adorable little film cranks the satire up a notch by shining the light on people who actually want to be drummers, but whose parents never supported their dreams. Why air drumming? Well, like instruments such as the violin and clarinet, it’s impossible to truly master the drums beyond childhood. “I know it’s too late to learn the drums”, Power (hilariously) tells his father. Mind you, there’s also a character in this film who can play the drums, but who, like Power, appals his father, with his yearnings to succeed as an air drummer.

This quirky and touching little comedy is bound to appeal to fans of Napoleon Dynamite. Adventures of Power features an impressive cast, including Michael McKean (Spinal Tap; A Mighty Wind; Best In Show), Jane Lynch (Best In Show; A Mighty Wind), and Entourage cast member, Adrian Grenier.
