Le Fils de L'épicier (The Grocer's Son)

Eric Guirado's beautifully understated family drama was aptly accompanied by Christophe Boutin's low key, largely acoustic and lightly vocal, and occasaionally percussive soundtrack.

Boutin has written a number of soundtracks (sadly not available in Australia, it seems). The compositional style of this soundtrack is ideal, given the gentle, introspective nature of the film for which it was written. The main theme, which we hear a few times, is just lovely, and brings to mind, the sound of José Gonzales, whose work has become so popular over recent years.

The soundtrack also includes snippets of dialogue - sometimes interspersed with the music. When listening to it, one drifts off blissfully to the Rhône-Alpes and the village in which the story was set, complete with the characters, the cicadas, and, at one point, even the rumbling of the mobile grocery van's engine.

If you are a fan of the film, you will love the soundtrack. Let's hope we hear more of Boutin's music here in the Antipodes.
