L'armée du Crime
Prolific film score composer Alexandre Desplat's musical skills are aptly demonstrated in the music composed for Robert Guédiguian's outstanding historical drama, L'armée du Crime.
Having seen the film, one might be surprised by just how contemporary the original music is. Given the drama and suspense of the story, and the Armenian background of the protagonist, there is a slight ethnic feel to a few of the pieces, as well as a gentle, pulsating intensity. Nevertheless, if you haven't seen the film (which, unfortunately, may be the case as it hasn't been released theatrically beyond its Festival screening here in Australia), you will still enjoy the music. Not only the music of Alexandre Desplat, whose compositions are deservedly popular, but also the wealth of other music included in the soundtrack.
Classical music used in the film, includes Ebarme dich, mien Gott, from St Matthew's passion. Wir setzen uns mit Tränen nieder is the customary piece from this particular mass that tends to be used in films, so it's a pleasant surprise to hear this beautiful aria used for a change.
