Gabriel Yared Retrospective

Interestingly, this double disc compilation begins with music that Gabriel Yared has scored later in life. One can’t help but be struck by this composer’s evolution.
Yared’s soundtrack to the French film Betty Blue was his first soundtrack to gain note and popularity in Australia. The film, and its soundtrack, became cult classics.
The excerpts from The English Patient go from an ethnic opening title, to the gentle swells of a lush orchestra, capitulating in a simple elegiac piece that sounds much like a Bach prelude, and ends up sounding extraordinarily like Sheep May Safely Graze.
This is quite a beautiful homage, but also demonstrates how Yared’s compositional style has flourished.
